Jack Alabaster (9), of Clydevale.

Jack Alabaster (9), of Clydevale.

Jack Alabaster, of Clydevale, is enthusiastic about fishing and he and his father Jonathan May often spend an hour or two beside the Clutha.

Younger brother William May (3) is also starting to develop an interest and they are the fourth generation to fish the river in Clydevale.

Jack said as well as the Clutha, he had been fishing in Lake Benmore and once caught a salmon.

Jack is also learning to shoot and has shot a rabbit and a hare, with help from his dad.

Mr May said he was drilling the gun safety rules into him.

The family has been living in Clydevale for about four years and while Jack has entered the the Greenfield Tavern's Valley Roar hunting and fishing competition before, this will be William's first time at the event.

In addition to the adult hunting competitions, there are junior and intermediate fishing sections as well as a family competition, in which they had to catch a mixed bag of five or six items, including a rabbit, a hare, a possum and a magpie.

The Valley Roar will be held on April 13, 14 and 15 and entries have to be in by April 11.
