An injured driver of a milk tanker and trailer unit which rolled on Matata Rd this afternoon has been taken to Whakatane Hospital.

The driver was initially reported to be trapped inside the vehicle.

A police communication spokesman told the Bay of Plenty Times police and emergency services personnel were called to the scene about 2.49pm today.

The milk tanker and trailer unit had come to rest on its side beside railway tracks near the intersection with Omeheu Rd but the road was not blocked, the spokesman said.

A police spokeswoman said the driver was transported to Whakatane Hospital by a St John ambulance crew and was reported to be in a "moderate condition" at the time.
