Biosecurity Minister Jim Anderton says an extra $1.25 million will be allocated to the management of varroa in the South Island.
Beekeepers are expected to use the money to make an unofficial bid to eradicate the mite by sending infected beehives to the North Island, and poisoning feral bees which might act as a reservoir of infestation.
