About 20 firefighters, backed by two fire appliances, two water tankers and two "smoke chaser" utility vehicles fought a fire in a gully near a Central Otago vineyard last night.
Firefighters were alerted at 7.23pm and extinguished the fire, which covered a scrubby area of about half a hectare in a gully, near a vineyard and also near State Highway 8, at Coal Creek Flat, 6km north of Roxburgh.
Volunteer firefighters from Roxburgh and Millers Flat pitched in, and help was also provided by the Central Otago District Council, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.
The fire was confined to the scrub, and it is understood the vines had escaped damage.
