Fencers join forces to win championship at South Island Agricultural Field Days

Two experienced South Canterbury fencers joined forces to contest the doubles competition in the South Island Agricultural Field Days at Kirwee and proved winners.

Steve Williamson, of Timaru, and Tony Brady, of Pleasant Point, joined up for the NZ Fencing Competitions South Island championships.

''It was the fourth year I've competed,'' Brady said.

''I've had different partners usually with my workers and had a second, fifth and a seventh.''

Linking up with Steve Williamson has brought greater success.

The two veteran fencers - Williamson has been a fencer for 16 years, Brady for 28 - came up against four other two-man combinations and clicked as a combination.

''It was a good day and good to meet fencers, share knowledge and compete,'' Williamson said.

Brady said the pair's success was probably due to the neatness of their work and speed.

Four events were held to decide the winner and Williamson and Brady won three of them to claim the South Island championship.

They won the irrigation crossing, gate-making and hanging, stapling and wirework and were second in the Waratah fence line.

They have been given the opportunity to compete at the Mystery Creek Fieldays in June but due to work commitments, Williamson will not be able to attend.

Brady said he was thinking of going but it was likely to be a ''no''.
