A 62-year-old man is dead after a "freak accident" on a farm near Middlemarch in Central Otago yesterday.

The retired farmer was helping his son out on the farm, near Clarks Junction 49km north-west of Dunedin, when he was run over at about midday.

"The man had stopped on a
farm track when a light farm truck hit him," Senior Constable Helen Fincham-Putter told NZPA.

"It was just a freak accident that we can all learn from," she said.

The man's name will be released when family members have been contacted.

The Department of Labour and police are investigating.
