Farmer leaders sought for DairyNZ board roles

Dairy farmers looking to step off-farm and into the boardroom are being sought by DairyNZ.

Farmer leaders are encouraged to apply for two available associate director roles which provide an opportunity to see governance in action on DairyNZ's Board of Directors.
Canterbury farmer Colin Glass is DairyNZ's board of directors' newest recruit, having joined last October.

"We have had a massive refocus on what is important to the sector — the new dairy strategy highlights the need for us to have vibrant, profitable businesses and communities," says Colin. "But that has to be done in a sustainable way that plays on New Zealand's competitive advantage.

"If we are able to be both sustainable and competitive, it bodes well for the future of dairy farming and our communities. We've faced our fair share of challenges, but we've stood up and taken responsibility to address them."

DairyNZ chairman Jim van der Poel says associate directors gain valuable experience working with the board.

"Associate directors contribute to the governance of DairyNZ and participate in the board's discussions, debates and decision-making processes," says Jim.

"The roles are a great opportunity for farmer leaders to gain experience and see first-hand how a board operates. It also enables dairy farmers to step into, and influence, the sector's leadership."

The positions are open to current levy paying dairy farmers who have a proven commitment to governance and aspire to be a leader in the dairy sector. Associate directors are appointed for successive six-month terms and are non-voting positions.

"We are looking for future leaders who will participate in our Board discussions and contribute practical insight, while being on their own journey into the dairy sector's governance roles."
