One of the earliest Tararua bull sales of the season yielded some pretty fair prices for Hereford bulls from Ngakouka Stud on the Weber Road, Thursday May 31, according to Carrfields Livestock auctioneer Neville Clark.
Ngakouka Hereford stud was established in 2000 by Bruce and Chrissina Donald — a relatively new operation and only hosting its second on-farm sale.
Already the quality of the breeding is becoming widely recognised with buyers attending from as far away as Gisborne and Martinborough. The genetics, temperament and strong hill country-bred nature of the bulls and heifers is consistently good and it showed in the prices, Mr Clark said. The 15 rising two-year bulls sold at an average of $5500 with the most sought after bulls going for over $7000. The top bull sold for $8000.
One experienced farmer said there was a bull for every customer's needs and bidding was strong for the favoured bulls.
A line of 10 rising two-year in-calf heifers sold for an average of $1675 but there was not much of a demand. Most buyers were after bulls. A further six rising three-year heifers sold at an average $1866. Bull sales are occurring about the country throughout June.
