There were no tents and gazebos featuring in the Dannevirke A&P Showgrounds on Saturday April 21 when the Ruahine Kennel Association held its annual dog show Dog Dayz.
Dog breeders were philosophical and one said in the scheme of things it was an almost perfect day.
On Sunday an autumn day rewarded the organisers for their courage in shifting the show from October to April and the colourful tents were up.
The weather caused the scratching of one third of the entries on Saturday, although numbers rose on Sunday.
There was no shortage of class, with the Best in Show on Saturday a Staffordshire bull terrier called Swankey the Enforcer being a New Zealand Grand Champion and an Australian Supreme Champion.
Runner-up Lover the Old English sheepdog topped all breeds for Best in Shows throughout New Zealand in 2017 and leads 2018 with his win last week.
Helen Clarke's samoyed, which placed second in the Utilities class is a Grand Champion and Supreme Specialty Champion.
On Sunday the winner was a Great Dane with the runner-up a Boston terrier.
Kids n Kanines gave children a chance to show their dogs in the ring. Each received a ribbon, chocolate and a certificate identifying the dog as the biggest, smallest, stripy-ist, shiniest. Twelve children entered and all the dogs behaved.
Organiser Tim Delaney says Dannevirke is the only club to have a kids' event in New Zealand.
He said the shows are great for the town with motels and restaurants full and shops busy. He said the two Australian and two New Zealand judges were thrilled with the friendly atmosphere at the show.
