Farm research funder Dairy InSight will spend $500,000 to start a major initiative aimed at defining environmental "best practice" for dairy farmers.
A leadership group - including representatives from dairy farming, science, universities and the wider community - will work on the programme.
They will aim to balance community expectations with the economic sustainability of farmers.
The work would be guided by the dairy industry's strategic framework and build on the $2.5 million recently approved by Dairy InSight for investment into research and technology transfer into farming systems.
