Despite the total hosing ban, coupled with unpredictable weather, Bush SuperGrans annual Free Spud in a Bucket contest was hotly contested.
Families and individuals made the most of their resources with the Emmerson family bringing their entries to the prize giving.
"We used recycled bath water to water our potatoes,"said Mark Emmerson. This proved to be a winning method with Mark and Ryan gaining awards.
The prize giving was held at Pahiatua Help-n-Hand on February 10.
Organisers said the was a success thanks to volunteers who gave their time and energy.
Organisers said the event was a great way for families to engage in the community and spend quality time as a family while passing on basic life skills to their children. Three generations from the Moynihan family supported each other with their entries.
Category winners were:
Children: Best Presented, Chelsea Figgess. Most Potatoes, Meghan Ironmonger. Largest Potato, Ryan Emmerson.
Adults: Best Presented, Mark Emmerson. Most Potatoes, Dave Wolland. Largest Potato, Ian Moynihan.
