The Country Early Edition's Dom George catches up with owner/operator Chris Mills from Kereru Brewing Company on this week's Top of the Hops.

The Country Early Edition's Dom George catches up with owner/operator Chris Mills from Kereru Brewing Company on this week's Top of the Hops.

Kereru started from humble beginnings. It was home brewed in Mills' rumpus room and honed at the local Upper Hut farmers markets. As the beer's popularity increased they moved to new premises in Maidstone Terrace where they now have an 1800 litre brew house.

Mills himself started out in the film industry in freelance visual effects. He soon found that in tough times people tend to drink beer more than need "pixels pushed around", so he changed his career path.

Mills originally hails from Boston Massachusetts so why the name Kereru? He considers himself a fully-fledged kiwi since he moved here in 2002 and has the New Zealand passport to prove it. Kereru are roosting outside his house and he liked their habit of getting inebriated on the fruit, so the name was a no-brainer.
