DairyNZ's Step Change project is designed to help dairy farmers achieve financial gains, while making progress towards environmental goals and adapting to pending regulations.
Through Step Change, DairyNZ, with other sector organisations, will deliver information, resources and support to help farmers lift profit whilecontributing to better water quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, DairyNZ Strategy and Investment Leader Jenny Jago said.
This included sharing information from projects where farmers had already achieved these gains as well as access to tailored science-based solutions.
"It's all about helping to give farmers more confidence to be able to take those actions that are needed to reduce environmental footprints. So that's water quality improvements and greenhouse gas emissions - while increasing profitability," Jago told The Country Sport Breakfast's Lee Piper.
"The profit part is a really important part of the programme because that's what needs to be informing important farm decisions and it's really important that farmers are financially able to adapt to the environmental commitments coming along," Jago said.
Farmers had already made a "huge commitment" to protect the environment, and Step Change was about building on "that good start that was made," Jago said.
Part of the Step Change programme was a "Know your numbers" event that would help farmers identify key profit and environmental numbers for their business, Jago said.
