Clear Communications has installed switching equipment to handle more efficiently internet protocol (IP) traffic sent as digital packets, unlike the traditional voice switches, which optimise data call routing and processing.
Customers of Zfree, Clear's free internet provider, will be the first to be transferred on to the new network.
Zfree users in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch will need to change their dial-up numbers as a result. ClearNet traffic will also be transferred to the new equipment over the next few months.
