KEY POINTS:
The other day, as I plugged in my PS3, I got nostalgic about PSOne games. I threw out my list and you've thrown back me some thoughts. So now nail for me your favourite PS2 games. God of War II that I was playing this week and raving about will make my top 10.
Here are some of your comments so far:
Chris began his email by quoting me: "Your picks; Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy VII, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Tekken, Tomb Raiser and Wipeout...Spot on fella!"
Thanks Chris. You must be my alter-ego! We must go multiplayer sometime.
Seriously there certainly were other views. Fantom3X Online Gamer also kindly said my list was "spot on" but added some more: Silent Hill, Suikoden hadn't heard of that Japanese RPG!, Vandal Hearts, Final Fantasy 8, Spyro and Tekken. How could you miss out Tekken?
Actually I thought it was on my list. I should have put it near the top anyway.
Lisa Larson said she's glad to see FFVII up there (that's Final Fantasy FYI) and she called it "not only one of the PSOne games but one of the best games of all-time, period."
Wow! I'd say a big affirmative "Ahuh" in reply with a sly smile knowing I spent far too much time absorbed in front of my PSOne.
Lisa adds: "I would also venture to say that Parasite Eve might get a place as well."
Jerome was also kind in saying: "Your list covers most of the great ones indeed (Tekken and Resident Evil agree totally) but also loved Suikoden and Final Fantasy 8."
Final Fantasy 8 - Yeah, FFVIII was one of those massive improvements in visual elements and effects and the video sequences were fantastic for it's time.
CE came in all the way from Tulsa in the US;
CE's picks: On PSone: Croc, Spyro 3 (long live Insomniac!), Twisted Metal 4 -I loved playing 'Mr Whippy' the 'Sweet Tooth', Tekken 3 and Driver.
On PS2: Tekken Tag Tournament, Ratchet and Clank 3, Jak and Daxter, Jak II, Tekken 5, Spider-Man 2, Need for Speed Underground 2, Star Wars Battlefront II, God of War (I'd include II but I don't have it yet).
CE -you'll need to splurge out on that God of War II game. You won't regret it ;)
Back to the land down-under to meet Malcolm, one of many rugby fans that wrote in. "Hi there. Jonah Lomu Rugby is from the PSOne range which has been top 5 in my playlist ever since its inception in 1996 from CodeMaster. So many of my other friends love the game too and think amongst all rugby games that it ranks as number 1. Ask around, interesting to see if I'm wrong."
Fair enough Malcolm. To be frank, I was feeling kinda down after the way the Super 14 turned out for my favourite local teams so I had wiped rugby off my list but fair enough. If only an on-form Jonah was still playing here!
Hamish from Auckland also joined in the Lomu fan club.
"Im glad MGS made your list but I have to say Jonah Lomu Rugby.
Steve joins in the chorus: "Jonah Lomu Rugby was the BEST ps1 game ever for me (Besides the first Crash Bandicoot). In fact I still play my copy of it on my PS2. It's amazing how many people bring up that game as a classic."
And Studog (cool name dude) also said Jonah Lomu adding: "Still the best game by far even after more than 10 years on the scene. Modern rugby game producers should take note of the arcade style rather than simulations. Many great memories have been had with this game."
Great point. Some of the early local rugby / league games weren't so flash, at least not when compared to the mighty Madden but Lomu did set the stage for a fun experience.
ChrisB of Tauranga liked another popular sport. "The Pro Evolution Soccer series by Konami. The beautiful game indeed. " Chris, I think that's one of the biggest ever titles in the UK.
Brandon thought "Driver was most under-rated and got lost in the car games but was rad."
Yeah, it wasn't bad but I can't beat the realism of Gran Turismo. And in fact Adrian is a big GT fan and thinks Grand Turismo 4 is the best one.
Ollie has another driving game fave: "I know everyone is going to say TOCA what? but does anyone remember TOCA 2 - British Touring Cars? It had the most realistic handling and damage mode of any car game I ever played, I got so many hours of enjoyment from it. I hardly ever play my PS anymore, but those sure were the days. Crash Bandicoot was legendary too."
Philip Petry lists his best PS game as Resident Evil. Good choice Philip. Mate, there are just so many. Thinking of the top 10 was just too cruel.
Chris O says: "I usually prefer PC games but Guitar Hero II has been great value on the PS2"
Chris, you're onto it. I'll be reviewing that mighty game soon.
Graeme thinks the best Game on the original Playstation was one many of us didn't encounter or have sadly forgotten:
"Sheepdog and Wolf - WB Cartoon greatness. I have been playing video games for near on 20 years now and no game brings about such fond memories. If you think this game is made for kids, you are mistaken."
Matt in Auckland had his list of Top 10 PSone games in particular order:
Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy VII, Wipeout, Breath of Fire III, Tekken,
Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Vib-ribbon, Final Fantasy V & VI compilation and Armored Core. Good list. My flatmate argues Wipeout is the best but I'm not sure he needs to move on either!
Nick G agrees PS1 Games were great but is a bit mean about PS3 saying PS3 is just the third iteration of the same games, yawn.
Hey Nick, we ain't seen nothin' yet. I've seen a preview of some of the new stuff that really uses the PS3 power but we'll have to wait til later in the year.
Meanwhile here's Nick's excellent PSOne top 10:
1.Gran Turismo 2
2.Wipeout 2097
3.Tekken 2
4.Twisted Metal: World Tour
5.Syphon Filter
6.Colin Mcrae
7.Music
8.Tony Hawk
9.Metal Gear Solid
10.Crash Bandicoot
You know Hawk skateboarding when it was first out, was so realistic it felt really groundbreaking.
