KEY POINTS:
Users Microsoft's Windows XP will have to wait for the third service pack release.
It says there's a "compatibility issue" between SP3 and Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System - a management programme for small to medium-sized businesses.
It was planning on releasing the update this week after finalising the code last week, until the bug was discovered.
A statement issued by Microsoft read: "In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Centre."
The glitch isn't constrained to XP though, with the same compatibility problems also appearing in the first service pack for Vista.
"To help protect our customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS," Microsoft said. "Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Download Centre."
The software giant says those running Microsoft Dynamics should not install the service packs for either operating system.
