The leading international awards for the internet have named nzherald.co.nz as one of the top 12 online newspaper websites.
The 11th Annual International Webby Awards have recognised the site as an Official Honoree, a distinction that highlights work exhibiting remarkable achievement.
There are seven honorees and five nominees in the category.
Kristine Garcia, nzherald.co.nz publisher, said the award is a major achievement for the site and for New Zealand.
"To be recognised as an honoree by the leading website awards in the world is quite remarkable when you consider we are in the company of such esteemed sites as the New York Times and The Guardian," she said.
David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards, said: "The Webby Awards honours the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the internet.
"nzherald.co.nz's Official Honouree selection is a testament to the skill, ingenuity and vision of its creators."
The site was recently redesigned by Auckland-based web development company Shift.
Hailed as the "Oscars of the internet" by the New York Times, The Webby Awards honour excellence on the internet, including websites, interactive advertising, online film & video, and mobile websites.
The awards are judged by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, a global organisation that includes David Bowie, Harvey Weinstein, Arianna Huffington, Matt Groening, Jamie Oliver, internet inventor Vint Cerf and RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser.
The 11th Annual Webby Awards received a record 8,000 entries from more than 60 countries. Out more than 8,000 entries submitted, fewer than 15 per cent were deemed Official Honorees.
