Sydney University, Department of Medical Entomology: Not only has the recent humid weather been a boon for the four or five species of native mosquito, but the Australian southern saltmarsh mosquito (Aedes vigilax) has recently been spotted near Auckland.
The southern saltmarsh is a carrier of some nasty bugs, including Murray Valley encephalitis, which killed 13 people during the last big outbreak in Australia, in 1974. It might be worth dropping in at this site the next time a mozzie lands on your arm.
Heavens Above: Weighing in at 112 tonnes, the International Space Station (ISS) is the largest spacecraft to orbit Earth.
It's already a spectacular sight but as further modules are added over the next five years it will become the brightest object in the night sky after the moon.
The link below gives details of forthcoming passes of the ISS as visible from Auckland, but the Heavens Above site will also track other objects at any location.
