PlayStation crosses over
Sony has unveiled a "crossover" PlayStation 2 video game console with a built-in DVD recorder, 120GB hard drive, TV tuner card and memory stick slot. The beefed-up PlayStation 2, called the PSX, will go on sale in Japan this year and in the United States and Europe early next year. The announcement comes amid speculation about the much-rumoured PlayStation 3, expected to debut in 2005.
Sony had previously announced plans to begin selling a revamped PS2 in June, which would play re-writeable DVDs, come with an online adaptor and run more quietly than current models. Two weeks ago, the company announced plans to compete with Nintendo's GameBoy in the handheld portable console market with the PSP (PlayStation Portable), which will go on sale late next year.
