Freespeling: We weren't sure whether this site was for real at first, but it's such fun we decided to mention it anyway. Freespeling is the home page of a campaign to free English speaking people from the chains of "correct" spelling. The mastermind behind the campaign, a Richard Wade from Oxford, Ingland, believes we should forget the rools and do our own thing: "The aim is to produce a new set of freespelings that most people will feel cumfertable with and start to use." He thinks it's an idea whose time has cum, and he plans to compile a list of new freespelt words based on preferd spelings selected by e-mail votes. So, if you have trubble getting to grips with the inkonsistensees of the Inglish langwage, here's your chance to chanj it.
Amigoingdown.com: This site estimates your chances of surviving your next trip by air, based on information published by aviation authorities. Simply type in your departure and arrival airport, the airline you are flying with, the type of aircraft and the time of year, and www.amigoingdown.com will compute your odds of surviving. When we specified a 747 flight from Auckland to Los Angeles with a well-known carrier, the site reckoned we stood a one in 16,594,951 chance of dying. "That's really quite good for this route," the site advised.
