Telecom rejects recommendation on Kiwi Share

Telecom is vowing to fight the recommendation of a ministerial inquiry which says the company's "Kiwi Share" obligation should be protected by law.

The ministerial inquiry into the telecommunications industry is proposing steps be taken to help encourage competition in the sector.

It recommends legislation to enforce the "Kiwi Share" agreement, which provides unlimited free local calls for domestic phone users.

However, Telecom spokesman Bruce Parkes says Telecom has met its obligations under the "Kiwi Share" deal.

He says the inquiry wants to make the agreement an open-ended deal which will be too costly for the company.
