The Government auction of radio spectrum got off to a flying start yesterday as Vodafone bought an 890MHz frequency for just over $2 million after only two rounds of bidding.
The band is used for cellphone services.
No bids were received for a single lot of "2G" spectrum in the 1785-1805MHz band left over from the previous auction, so it will be retained by the Crown.
Bidding continues for the nine blocks of 3.4-3.6GHz spectrum suitable for wireless local loop phone and internet connections, with bidders showing caution in the first two rounds. Bids ranged from $100,000 to $170,344. Bidders include UCC, a company associated with the Far North telecommunications project, Counties Power, BCL and Vodafone.
Bids for five blocks of 24.5-26.4GHz "local multi-point distribution services" (LMDS) frequency ranged from $100,000 to $133,000 after two rounds. Bidders include TelstraClear, Video Networks, BCL and Vodafone.
