LOS ANGELES - Rolling Stone magazine is marking the 60th anniversary of John Lennon's birthday by releasing never-before-heard audio excerpts from a 1970 interview with the former Beatle on its website.
Among the 16 audio bytes are such Lennon observations as "I always was very respectful about Mick and the Stones, but he said some rather tarty things about the Beatles ... I can knock the Beatles, but don't let Mick Jagger knock them."
Parts of the interview, conducted by Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, will be reprinted in the magazine's special Lennon tribute issue, which is due on newsstands on Friday.
In addition, the issue features interviews with 34 artists, ranging from Keith Richards and David Crosby to Billy Corgan and Rob Thomas, who talk about Lennon's life and death.
Lennon, who would have been 60 on October 9, was murdered in December 1980 while preparing a comeback.
Elsewhere in the issue, producer Phil Spector discusses his working relationship with Lennon.
The magazine also publishes the text of Yoko Ono's recent letter to parole officials in New York asking them not to release her husband's killer, Mark David Chapman.
