Thirty-three Auckland restaurants and one in Taupo have joined an online booking system launched this week.
The site, www.Time2Dine.co.nz, developed by Aucklander Michael Brandon and based on a service in Britain, can be browsed without a password but membership is required to make bookings.
Diners pay $34 for one year's membership, with three and six-month memberships costing $14 and $24 respectively.
Restaurants pay $1 for each booking for before 5pm and $2 for each evening booking.
The participating restaurants confirm a set number of tables for each day and the underlying database keeps track of seats remaining.
When a booking is made, the restaurant is alerted by email, fax or text message.
Customers can also cancel a booking online.
Brandon said 1000 customers would be a break-even point and he hoped to reach that target within a couple of months.
