KEY POINTS:
Social networking megasite Facebook has accidentally leaked some of its own source code.
The homepage code was published by Facebook onto a new blog called Facebook Secrets, where it remains.
While the accidental leak doesn't actually give much more away than hints to naming conventions and file structures, it is extremely unusual for giant tech companies to mess up as openly.
A Facebook spokesperson told tech site eWeek that a misconfigured web server was to blame for a small amount of page display code being leaked online.
"It was not a security breach and did not compromise user data in any way," the spokesperson said.
"Because the code that was released only powers the Facebook user interface, it offers no useful insight into the inner workings of Facebook."
The company did, however, underline that publishing the code violated several American laws and asked that "people not distribute it further".
