Plastic instruments for clarity

German doctors are going over to plastic instruments for keyhole surgery, but the reason is not to save money.

The idea has advanced because metal instruments lead to blurred images on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) monitors used in much of today's minimally invasive surgery.

Engineers in Aachen are employing plastics reinforced with carbon fibres for new instruments.
