Only days into 2014, and the new year is already shaping up to be an annus horribilis for Skype as the Skype Twitter account was hijacked by the Syrian Electronic Army hackers.
The group took over the account yesterday, posting fake tweets telling Skype users to avoid Microsoft's email services as "they are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments."
The dodgy tweet has been retweeted at least 6,000 times. This followed another fake tweet (which was deleted), saying "stop spying on people," referring to accusations that the software giant had worked closely with the NSA.
Skype's Facebook page and a company blog hosted at Skype's website were also compromised. The timing of these breaches is particularly concerning, happening on New Year's Day when most IT managers are on vacation, hence the significant period of time between the Tweets and them being deleted.
