Horror author Stephen King says he and his readers could become "big publishing's worst nightmare" by downloading a new novel from his website for $US1 ($2) an instalment.
On his website, readers will be able to download the opening instalment of King's The Plant, the first time a significant release has bypassed a publisher.
He said the whole process will be "on the honour system" and the second instalment will go online on August 21.
King started the novel 10 years ago.
