Garden-NZ
A well-maintained and designed general garden site. Most impressive are the up-to-date monthly gardening tips and detailed guides on various garden styles from coastal to woodland.
Compared with these, the Garden Doctor section is disappointing as it seems to be little more than a vehicle for selling a range of the sponsor's sprays for pests and diseases.
NZ Gardens Online
This site is a valuable resource for beginners and serious gardeners alike. One of the highlights is a guide to the growing phenomenon of New Zealand's mail-order nurseries. The nurseries are listed according to which of around 50 plant types they specialise in, and many accept orders online. There are also some well-researched articles on anything from hydroponics to growing trees in cities and a lively interactive notice board, which is at present receiving half a dozen contributions a day.
bestgardening.com
A bright and cheerful site that will be most useful to beginners and those who see a garden as an extension of their home rather than an end in itself. There are plenty of well-written how-to articles explaining subjects like composting, vegetable growing or general plant care. Other subjects covered are garden makeovers and how to attract birds to your garden, including a brief guide to what each of the common bird species likes to eat.
Yates
Yates' homepage includes seeds, bulbs, plant food, growing media, and propagated plants. The site is bright and easy to navigate but its extensive use of graphics makes it a little slow.
Ecostore
Ecostore's online gardening store includes a range of compost-makers and environment friendly pesticides and sprays.
