He's still got a couple of months up his sleeve to clean out his considerably large desk before taking the job as Telecom chief executive in late September, but BT Wholesale chief Paul Reynolds has already indicated the progressive approach he has in mind for his leadership of Telecom.
Is this video interview with TelecomTV - yes, they have a TV channel devoted to news about broadband and mobile phones, Reynolds says Telecom simply has to succeed in New Zealand because it is such a fundamental part of the economy.
"With new industries like IT and the film industry there are bandwidth hungry growth ambitions that exist in New Zealand and the telecom market has to succeed and be strong for the country to succeed. The challenge is to set the ground for the future in that way," he says.
"It is a Pacific Rim economy and there is quite a mixed economy that's growing up on the back of that. If you are in Auckland you can feel the new world excitement and the growth and that's really a big part of the attraction," he adds in the interview where TelecomTV suggested BT's "21st century man" is preparing to "move to the shire".
A shire it may be in the eyes of the Brits, but hopefully, in the near future, a well connected one.
