New Zealand had about 1.24 million internet subscribers by September last year, according to a Statistics New Zealand survey.
The survey released today showed there were 1.01 million residential (household) subscribers and 224,400 business and government subscribers.
The predominant connection technology was dial-up with 869,300 subscribers.
Almost a third of subscribers had broadband connections, an increase of 15 per cent from March 2005.
There are now nine broadband subscribers per 100 inhabitants in New Zealand compared to 11.8 subscribers per 100 inhabitants in other OECD countries,
The number of business and government subscribers increased by about 17 per cent from March, while residential subscribers increased by 5 per cent over the same period.
The survey is a six monthly census of all internet service providers in New Zealand.
