KEY POINTS:
Microsoft has announced an immediate price drop of its next-gen Xbox 360 games and entertainment system.
The entry-level 'Core' console package is now just $449.95.
Already ahead of the more expensive Sony PlayStation 3, and with next month's highly-anticipated launch of action game Halo 3, Microsoft thinks the move will further entrench it as market leader.
Microsoft regional director David McLean said: "Xbox 360 is all about offering consumers a choice - and I think we've just made that choice even easier."
The best deal is still the added-value Xbox 360 Pro System, which retails at $649.95.
It includes the Xbox 360 console, 20GB hard drive, wireless controller, media remote, component HDAV cable, an ethernet cable and a 30-day trial of Xbox Live.
