Te Puni Kokiri, the Ministry of Maori Development, is close to completing the first phase of a department-wide document and knowledge management system.
The system uses software called LiveLink from Open Text to create a structured storage and search facility for the department's paperwork. It will also form the base for the department's intranet.
Corporate services manager Kim Bluett says the key goals of the project, which is expected to cost less than $1 million, are to share information, make it accessible, and build up corporate knowledge.
IS manager Gary Weston-Webb says the LiveLink software is essentially a sophisticated search engine with the added ability to create a structured, consistent information bank.
The software also allows collaboration.
Acceptance testing is almost complete and internal training is due to begin.
