Lucent cuts jobs

Lucent Technologies, the biggest US maker of telephone equipment, is to cut 20 per cent of its UK workforce to help return the company to profit.

Lucent, hit by a fall in orders this year, said cutting the 500 UK jobs was a result of "restructuring". Lucent is slashing almost half its global workforce and selling assets as its losses widen and phone-equipment sales fall.
