Budget computer retailer NetPC has begun to sell Lindows Linux-based PCs starting at around $900, including GST, or $560 with an internet contract.
The move comes hot on the heals of Dick Smith's launch of Linux PCs, which use the Mandrake Linux operating system. Both approaches cut costs by displacing Microsoft's Windows XP OS with a free Linux OS.
Lindows is a variant of the Linux operating system that has the ability to run some Microsoft Windows-based programs.
NetPC sells mostly Microsoft Windows-based systems and it offers Windows XP for an additional $199. The hardware specifications for the entry-level model feature a Duron 900MHz processor, 128MB of memory, a 20 GB hard drive and a 15in monitor.
In the United States, Wal-Mart caused a stir mid-year by selling Lindows PCs for US$299 ($600). It now offers them for US$199.
NetPC managing director Brian Avent said Lindows was a "baby Linux" that was easy to use and set up.
NetPC is bundling Lindows with StarOffice 6.0, a competitor to Microsoft Office.
The firm has reduced the advertised price further to $499 plus GST for its base model by selling a 36-month $24.99 internet connection with ISP ICONZ. However, that does need to be prepaid.
