KEY POINTS:
Kiwibank customers have become the latest New Zealanders targeted by internet scammers trying to get their account information.
A fake email has been sent out claiming $20,000 dollars has been deposited into a Kiwibank account.
The link on the email leads to a mock up of the Kiwibank homepage where people are asked to enter their account and pin numbers.
This gives the scammers access to the account from which they quickly withdraw money.
Kiwibank spokesman Bruce Thompson said the email was a "disturbing" scam because it looked real and people would "conjure up a reason" why they might have received $20,000.
Such scams were not new and people were wise to them now, he said.
Kiwibank hoped to have the website of the latest scam shut down by today, he said.
The state-owned bank worked with Interpol, the internet operator and other banks to close the site and warn customers.
"They (scammers) hit all banks every week and won't go away, but banks will protect their customers."
The bank had not heard of anyone who had lost money in the latest scam.
