Q. Steve is disappointed with Norton because it failed to pick up the W32. Yaha.F@mm virus.
A. That virus was identified on June 17 and was on the Norton update list the next day, Steve. If you were infected before the 18th, Norton wouldn't have detected it. (Most other reputable anti-virus programs wouldn't have either). On the other hand, if you were infected after that date, it was due to your virus list being out of date. Always update your virus list at least daily, or if you are lucky enough to have a Jetstream connection, do it more often. More information at Symantec security response.
Q. Daniel has nasty problems with Windows, requiring re-installation. Unfortunately, a misplaced setup CD makes this a formidable task.
A. Many manufacturers hide the setup files in C:\windows\options\cabs, Daniel, but you'll need your windows licence number to re-enter. If you have no CD or licence, you'll have to purchase one. Make sure it's legitimate with CD/licence and manual included. A good place to get a cheap secondhand copy is the auction site Trade Me. But be very wary of sellers with no history.
Q. Several readers have complained about having their search and home pages hijacked and replaced with pornographic websites.
A. Yes we've dealt with this a few times and unfortunately these raunchy sites can be very persistent - some even return after a reboot. Stranger still, all victims seem to be innocent and the "raunchy site surfer" was a visitor using their machine. If you lend your machine to someone else, create a separate login profile for the guest and stop some of his or her mistakes becoming your on-going nightmare. Each hijack uses different tricks, but SpyWare Info Browser Hijacking - is a good place to start. Also included within that page is a link to IE-SPYAD, which sets Internet Explorer to ignore these annoying hijackings in the future. It's not a cure, but it will provide some prevention.
