Q. Les is frustrated that his Windows XP upgrade caused his Sony Memory Stick reader to fail. Sony has not yet solved his problem and while he waits, his photos remain locked within the card.
A. Check DriverGuide, Les. This huge resource has many old, outdated or new aftermarket drivers available for all sorts of manufacturers and components. Joining is free and in most cases you should find the driver you are after. Or Dick Smith has many XP compatible, USB multi-type memory card readers.

Q. Ray writes: "After I shut down into hibernation mode or off, when an ordinary incoming phone call is received, the computer turns itself on. The only way to stop this whenever I go away is to turn the power off to the computer."
A. You have to go into Bios (Basic Internal Operating System) Setup, Ray. Usually, you press Delete as the computer is booting and watch for a message "Press DEL to enter setup" (though some brands use a different key). Once in Setup, look for "Wake on Ring" or "WOR" and disable that setting. Be careful in Bios Setup - messing with the wrong settings may stop your computer from running. Once you are done, exit setup saving the changes.

Q. Betty gets a message: "This file type could harm your computer if it contains malicious code" when she's about to download a MSN Messenger update from Microsoft - so she stops the download. "Am I being paranoid?" she asks.
A. That message is designed to warn you of the possible dangers of downloading files from suspect sources. Microsoft is a site that is reputable and relatively safe to download updates, etc from. Don't be paranoid, get that update.

Q. "I have two strange "ku2 -X-" icons in my system tray. Both seem to be an unfamiliar virus scanner. What are they?" Ted asks.
A. It's the "Backdoor. IRC. Jemput" Trojan, Ted. Not good. Quickly search Symantec to find an explanation and cure.
