"I won't run without advertising," screamed Terry's machine when he tried to run a file called "Spider" that the Herald had recommended a few weeks ago.
Don't worry, Terry! Spider is an Innocent "zip" file. That rude message is the result of a program you are running called ZipZilla (a file decompression program that came packaged with GoZilla). It unzips zip (compressed) files. I suggest you download and install WinZip (another popular decompression utility). When you install WinZip, it will take over the job of handling zip files.
Stop the forwarding of viruses to your friends and workmates on your contact list. Scottie has sent in this great idea. (It's quite common for viruses to send out an infection to everyone on your contact list.)
In your address book, create a new entry called !0000 with the e-mail address of !0000. As it will be the first entry, it will fail and the e-mail will not be sent. Furthermore, you'll be alerted to the possibility of a new virus on your machine. Clever.
Hazel wants to get rid of the "Working Online" message in her Outlook Express.
Try this, Hazel. In Outlook Express go to Tools/Options/Connections/Change. Select "Never Dial a Connection."
Mike is annoyed with ihug for charging for a new service that filters spam and junk e-mail.
A query to ihug chief executive Nick Wood received a quick and reasonable reply: "The service is one we buy from someone else on a monthly cost per subscriber so we have little choice but to charge."
A couple of Outlook Express users have found a better way to do text wrapping around pictures within Outlook Express.
Thanks to Terry and Anne for pointing this out - and special thanks to Peter for these specific instructions: Go to Tools/Options/Send, Mail Sending Format/HTML/Apply/OK. For New Mail, enter recipient, subject and message. Click where you want the picture to sit. Go to Insert/Picture/Browse/Open/Layout/Alignment/Left (or Right)/OK. Finish typing your message then Send. When viewing the "Picture" window, use "?" for details of all layout options. You can also put a border around the picture if desired.
