Welcome to InBox, where we attempt to answer your internet questions.
Q. "XP refuses to keep the right time and intermittently changes it by two hours," says a frustrated Martin.
A. Your Time zone is set incorrectly, Martin. Double click the clock and select "TimeZone". It should read "(GMT +12:00) Auckland, Wellington". Windows XP checks the internet time servers regularly and adjusts the clock to match them. If your zone is wrong, it'll adjust it to match. If it goes two hours out, it's probably set to Australia or Hawaii.
Q. How do you save a Works ".wps" file so that anyone can view it? Julie tried, but her friend can't open it and asked her to save it as a file type that they can read.
A. It's easy, Julie. Open Works/File/Save As. In the file type dropdown box, select TXT (Notepad can read this, but all formatting is lost) or RTF (Rich Text Format, which will keep the formatting). Files saved in these types will be readable on any Windows machine.
Q. Jack writes: "My Windows XP restore points have vanished, and a new one for a year 2040 date has taken all the restore space. I think it was caused by a power failure."
A. Disable, then re-enable "System Restore", Jack. Go to Start/Control Panel/System/System Restore. Click "Turn off System Restore" then click OK. This deletes the offending restore point; though all the old restore points also will be lost. Now, remove the tick to enable System restore (this will create a new point). More info at Microsoft Support.
Q. "Why do my '.jpg' pictures take minutes to email," asks Doug?
A. When saving a .jpg picture file, select the compression level, Doug. Go to File/save, select jpg file type from dropdown menu. Hit options button. Slide compression bar to 50 per cent and use the size dropdown to select the next size down.
