Welcome to InBox, where we attempt to answer your internet questions.
Q: Rob wants to know what a 1Mbps Jetstream plan would let him do.
"I am impressed with the speed of the new internet plans Telecom is offering. Will I be able to view streaming video and listen to radio off the internet with 1Mbps access? Also, I enjoy downloading videos off the internet to view at my leisure. Is this possible with ADSL? I also want to play games."
A: The 1Mbps Jet stream (ADSL) option is like a Ferrari racing a push bike. You can do all you ask plus more.
Online games are more responsive, downloads take a fraction of time, 24/7 connection means no dialup wait; just use it when you need it. Even if you have children with their own machines on a home network, everyone surfs at the same time.
But, at 1mbit speed, data can enter your machine at a phenomenal rate; which can equate to a huge volume over one month. High users can exceed data limits quickly; so it's wise to start off on a flat rate option.
For the new prices of broadband, each internet provider has its own plans; some are cheaper than what Telecom gazette on their site. See your internet providers' option pages for a full list of options.
Most importantly, make sure you have firewalls / virus protection in place, up to date and active before you upgrade.
Q: Start-up problems in Windows XP:
Sharon complains her machine freezes when she starts it. "My husband's machine is the same specifications and has the same software, yet he has no problems. What can I do to stop this happening?"
A: Microsoft has a page dedicated to troubleshooting start-up problems in Windows XP, Sharon.
Use your husband's machine to check the page, run through the suggested steps on your machine to eliminate the most common causes: Microsoft Support, search for article Q308041
Q: Kirstie is under the impression that the SP2 CD is no-longer available.
A: It's available, Kirstie. The search link incorrectly states available "later this summer". Order it from: Microsoft search for SP2 CD and click on Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD.
