Q. Martin removes Outlook Express's indents while forwarding or replying to emails. He's confused, though, it doesn't seem to remove indents placed by earlier sources.
A. No, Martin, you can't automatically remove indents placed by previous senders, as they become part of the email text when received by your machine. You can only stop your Outlook Express adding them when passing the email on. Removing previous indents is a tedious task that must be done manually.
Q. Ted wants to get rid of those hidden internet history files mentioned in a Herald story, "Clean up disk to improve online privacy", by Michael Foreman last year.
A. Try Historykill, Ted. It's a free, 15-day demo that lays waste to all those history files - including the hidden ones.
Q. "The identity certificate uses an unknown signature algorithm." John's Mac belches this message when it accesses some secure sites.
A. Your browser software is out of date, John. Apple suggests a couple of Internet Explorer updates to rectify it.
Q. "OE refuses to open IE when hyperlinks are clicked," complains Subhash.
A. Set Internet Explorer as the default browser. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Internet Options/Programs. Confirm "IE should check to see if it is the default" is selected. Click Apply/OK. Open Internet Explorer. When it asks "Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Do you wish to make it the default?" hit "Yes".
Q. More on last week's "strangled duck" modem noises: Rose-Mary has the reverse problem in Windows 98. She wants those noises back. But the modem volume control in her machine is grey and unavailable.
A. Your modem drivers don't automatically provide that Windows feature, Rose-Mary. So you have to manually tell the modem to turn on the speaker. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Modems/General/Properties/Connection/Advanced. In the "Extra Settings" Box Type "ATL1" (AT tells the modem a command is coming and L1 for a "low" squawk. (Other commands: L0 = Mute, L2 = Medium, L3 = High).
