Q. Bill's desire to move into digital video editing led him to buy a flash new digital video camera; unfortunately, his poor old Pentium I computer doesn't seem to have a USB (Universal Serial Bus) port. "What can I do?" he asks.
A. No matter what you do, Bill, the old Pentium I will struggle to deal with today's video editing software. For an immediate solution you can add a USB port (available from Dick Smith, catalogue XH6646, for $38). A better long-term solution is to upgrade your computer.
Q. Tania was out visiting a friend who had a picture representing each album in the Windows XP music folder. "Except for recent albums, all I see on mine is a folder. Is there an easy way to make this happen for me?"
A. Yes, Tania. Set the music folder to view as "thumbnails" then download each album cover and save it in the album folder as a jpeg image. Your picture should now show in that folder. To make it represent the folder, right click the folder then Properties/Customise/Choose Picture and double-click the picture.
Q. Windows XP doesn't show "Hibernate" as an option, complains Karen.
A. Start/Turn Off Computer and hit SHIFT - the standby button will change to Hibernate. Now you see it, now you don't, Karen. Microsoft explains.
Q. Inbox readers daily fall foul of the Windows Update site with pre-XP versions of Windows. Tony likes Windows 98, yet the Microsoft update site refuses to play ball with him.
A. You wouldn't be alone in thinking Microsoft is phasing out the old Windows versions in an almighty hurry, Tony, but this page deals with all issues that arose when Update became XP-oriented.
