Welcome to InBox, where we attempt to answer your internet questions.
* Jack Kwan is frustrated: "I have installed a free internet telephone service. The problem is, when I ring up someone and they answer, I can hear them through my speakers, but they cannot hear me when I am talking into the microphone. Hope you can help, as I would like to talk to my son in Australia for free."
There are several things to check, Jack:
1) Make sure the microphone is on and remove any tick from the microphone Mute box - double-click the volume-control beside the clock on your taskbar.
2) Check that the mike is plugged into the correct input on your soundcard (the Mic socket).
3) Reduce the microphone volume a bit (it may be amplifying the signal too much) and reduce the volume of your speakers - you may be getting feedback.
* Steve Humphries is an Aucklander living in Brisbane: "I want to set up my computer so I can send electronic letters/attachments that are then received on either an international or local fax machine. I need to know which fax software I should use, as in which is user-friendly and works well with all Microsoft Office programs/Corel Draw graphics, and also how to set up phone/fax fields within the programs."
I'm not a fax expert, Steve, but WinFax Pro v. 10 is the leader in the field and provides tools to attach any documents, be they Word (.doc) files, Excel Spreadsheet (.xls) files, Corel Draw files or whatever, just like attaching files to email. It also has plenty of set-up Wizards to help you configure your particular modem and settings for fax-back technology.
* P. Moon writes, more in irony than anger: "I'd like to thank you for enabling my children to view pornography without my knowledge, as they are now all empowered with the knowledge of how to delete the history-list through reading your column. "For three years I have managed to convince them that I could check up on them when I was too busy working to watch them. "Is there any way, as a concerned parent, I can stop them accessing these sites?"
Uh-oh. Time to get NetNanny or Cyber Patrol onto the case.
* More of your InBox questions will be answered Wednesday in CyberLunch, on air 12:00-1:00 with Murray Lindsay and Peter Sinclair on Classic Hits 97FM.
