Welcome to InBox, where we attempt to answer your internet questions.
*Ross has struck a problem that more and more readers may experience as webcams become part of our everyday life: "I have recently bought a new digital camera that doubles as a webcam. I can use it with Netmeeting and it gives a reasonable-quality video feed ... However, I am having trouble contacting other people with the program. If I want to hook up with family in the UK, what address should I enter?"
Don McAllister, our High Geek, suggests getting all your friends to use a program called ICQ, which can automatically fire up Netmeeting and call the required user direct. You can get this program free from mirabilis.com - 40 million users can't be wrong! The drawback to video chat is that a lack of bandwidth available through a modem can cause text slowdown or voice degradation and poor video quality. Make sure you have the fastest connection you can afford!
* Steve Waddell is suffering from web address overload: "I use Internet Explorer and would like to delete some of the addresses from the drop-down list. If I left click to highlight an address, Internet Explorer will go to that address and will not accept the delete key."
Easy, Steve: click Tools/Internet Options/Clear History and the entire list will be deleted.
* Ron Johnson writes: "I communicate a lot with friends who love the odd cartoon or family photo. However, [a friend's] machine will not show .jpeg or .gif images. Can I advise him to check and activate anything if required?"
Your friend needs to check his "associations" for these two graphics file-types. Here's how: click My Computer/View/Folder Options/File Types, select the file-type, then go Open/Edit and in the "Application to Perform Action" box type: "C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome He can then use IE to view the files.
