KEY POINTS:
Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Mount Everest is being honoured with a special logo on Google's New Zealand and Australian homepages.
Overseas sites also used the logo, which marks today's 55th anniversary of the record-breaking climb made by Sir Ed, who died in January, and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
Google's logo is often changed to celebrate special events - like blacking it out completely for the recent energy-saving Earth Hour.
It has also recently introduced Google Artist Themes, which allow iGoogle homepages to be customised all of the time, rather than just on holidays or special occasions, choosing from work by a several artists including New Zealand's Anne Geddes.
* An earlier version of this story said overseas sites did not use the logo. They did, when it was May 29 in their time zone.
