KEY POINTS:
Gmail users who access their account from more than one device will now be able to use the IMAP protocol.
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is supported by a huge range of devices - including smartphones and PDAs as well as computers - and makes syncing email accounts across multiple systems simple.
Google is starting to roll out IMAP for Gmail as from today, supporting all devices and platforms, the company said.
POP access has been available on Gmail since the free webmail service was first rolled out, but it didn't reflect changes on your Gmail account when you logged back in.
This meant going back and basically retracing the steps you made say, on your desktop machine, on the Gmail server.
Once configured correctly IMAP sorts everything across each machine, and works seamlessly.
Google says accounts will all be sorted within a few days.
