Detailed results from last year's census will soon be available free online.
Statistics NZ will receive $617,000 over the next four years to fund the public access, of which $455,000 would be allocated in this year's budget.
Previously, Statistics NZ had charged for Census information through a subscription, which cost between $3300 and $25,000, depending on the information required.
The cost had been a major barrier to access for many communities carrying out important demographic research on the shape of New Zealand society, Statistics Minister Laila Harre said this morning.
"This change also means that businesses and economic development agencies that would previously have paid for such information can now spend their money in other areas," she said in a statement.
Better access to Census information meant local authorities, community boards, health boards and community organisations would be able to plan services better. It would also help schools better understand their local communities.
The change would be implemented later this month, she said.
