The difference between successful accounting software packages designed for small firms and those designed for larger firms comes down to one word - agility.
That's the word offered by Peter Lucas, Australian managing director of Adelaide-based Sybiz Software.
"We've just done research on companies like AcPac and Navision, and the underlying psyche is different," Mr Lucas said.
"Our product is designed for small business where you need agility - you've got one person doing the accounts, he or she may be doing a sales invoice now, a receipt the next moment, a purchase invoice the next.
"The big packages are designed around accounting departments, where people have defined roles. They're very good at setting up business rules for your job description and role - they can set up a workstation to help you do your job - but they lose agility in doing that."
Which is not to say Sybiz can't handle large jobs. Local manager Mike Francis said that for the past three years it had been used to run part of Air NZ's engineering workshops.
Sybiz has just released version 2.4 of Vision, its Windows-based accounting package designed for companies with one to 30 staff and turnover of between $1 million to $50 million. It is priced on turnover.
That puts it in competition with exo-net, CBA/Greentree and Exchequer, but below Great Plains and Navision.
