KEY POINTS:
It feels like years since we first played Diablo - and probably was- so in this age of incredible games, it's fair to expect a Diablo clone to be much advanced.
Sadly, that's the problem with what could be a good game when it comes to Loki.
We've seen the repetitive hash and slash type of storyline before. It's based on four cultures - Greek, Norse, Egyptian and Aztec - and you take on the role of a warrior, fighter, sorcerer or shaman, all with different skills and different fighting styles.
Sadly the story is not very compelling but it has you traipsing around the territories and it's not always clear where you should be heading or what you are looking for.
In fact, some parts were just impossible to pass without skilfully using the terrain to block the boss.
You fight your way through various quests - probably 50 or so- and explore dungeons. Visually it's OK, sound is pretty reasonable, and there's certainly plenty of action as each time you re-enter an arena your marauding monster hordes respawn to kill you again and again.
There are however quite a few nice weapons to deal death and magical combinations to suit your tastes but limited magic upgrade paths.
Standard upgrades have an extensive list of rebuild options and that's about the only thing in its favour - oh, bar the magical additions to your skills.
The problem with similar toned games and the problem here is that it would be far more interesting if it didn't feel like I've been there before and done that already.
Besides Diablo, there is even a feel of Titan Quest about it, however that had fewer crashes and slowdowns. Wanting a bit more I reinstalled Titan Quest for another bash.
If you haven't played Diablo or are happy to play a clone, you may find Loki enjoyable.
Most of us are demanding enough these days to hope for some originality or unique content to spice the story up a little.
The PC game (rated M) was developed by Cyanide Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive.
